N.B. Harnoncourt believes these three symphonies were conceived as a cycle which he characterizes as an 'instrumental oratorio'. This explains that the
symphonies 39 and 40 are played attacca, and that there is no applause after No. 39.
Harnoncourt has recorded these symphonies for Sony; this live recording offers the opportunity to get acquainted with his views on these symphonies.
