ReplyDeleteSeems a few still look down on Carmen, though it ranks very high amongst operas IMHO.
Greatly admired by Tchaikovsky, of course. Back in the day when Radio 3 Controllers took its educational mission seriously there was a programme illustrating how the first theme of PIT's 4th symphony is derived from the Toreador's song - the Toreador perceived by Tchaikovsky as the opera's embodiment of Fate.
